Do Australians want the Queen or not?

I've read that many Australians want a republic. What exactly do they have now? Aren't they already in control of their own country? Does it mean that the Queen is the official head of state? Do they not want her as head of state?

I believe it's kind of like Canada. Yes, they have their own government, but technically the queen is still top dog. It's all official business and isn't what really governs things, but because it's so outdated, some people find it quite silly and unnecessary.

I am not Australian, but I am here to say how pointless a queen would be. In the UK a queen is completely irrelevant, we pay for a royal family out of our taxes, they have no influence of our way of life, pathetic, I hate how we pay for a royal family for no reason whatsoever.

Australians are getting very old of the monarchy system. We still have a general-governor that links us to the British system, but other than that we are not linked to the Queen at all. The only reason why we are keeping this link is to maintain friendship and prevent hostility, though some people still regard Britain as out mother country.

However, Australia is getting more multi-cultural everyday, and while we still acknowledge that Britain first populated Australia so that it is modern today, in other ways we are just different countries with good connections.

Doesn't the Royal Family bring in a lot of tourists though? What with Buckingham Palace and Windsor Castle?

Really? I thought everyone liked her, especially with the Royal Wedding and stuff - lots of people from Australia actually flew there just to see and support the Royal Wedding!!!

But no - we would be unhappy if we had to pay taxes that aren't going to be used for our public facilities and stuff.

I have no objection to her as a person. But she is one of the most independently wealthy women in the country, yet the tax payer still has to fork out £ millons each year for her upkeep! And, not only that, but there is the Civil List, which pays for the salaries of her staff, as well as for things such as furniture and furnishings and catering! Buckingham Palace and Windsor Castle are owned by the British State, yet we have to pay exhorbitant amounts to visit them.

And she's only just started paying income tax!

    Need I go on...

Why would she need to pay income tax? I thought that her income WAS from the tax payers? It would be funny to tax someone who gets their income from tax. :P

Or maybe I am just not educated in that area.

Still, Buckingham Palace is one of the major tourist areas in Britain, as well as the topic of many documentaries on the Royal Lifestyle in England, so I guess she has done some major work in promoting for the tourism industry.

You have no idea how big the Royal Wedding was here in Australia.

    Everyone loved Kate.

I think the Australian people are not fond of the Queen, they are generally against her and I can understand why. There is a love/hate relationship between England and Australia but the Queen represents the hate part.

I think that's a completely misplaced and uneducated comment to say that all Australians 'hate' the Queen. It's also a sweeping statement that is not true. My mother is Australian and she is a big UK royalist. Same goes for my sister and her husband, and also many of my friends who live out there. Are you Australian yourself? Do you understand the history and the nature of the relationship between the UK and Australia? If not, then perhaps make some attempt to educate yourself, before you make statements like you have done here.

So you don't just confine your sweeping comments to the subject of nutrition? It's clear from this post that you have no background knowledge of the true picture in Australia. People do not hate the Queen - even Australians who are pro-republic have no animosity to the Queen - they just see the system of government as outdated, which of course it is.

There is no love/hate relationship between the UK and Australia, or at least, not in the widespread way you state. I've never been to Australia, but I've met a lot of Australians in the UK who went to the expense of a trip back to the 'Old Country,' as they call it, even though they have either been born in Australia or spent most of their lives there.
